Stone Letter Project 2017

I was invited by Hiroshi Katayama from the Nagoya University of Art, to contribute a stone lithograph to the exhibition Stone Letter Project no 1. The print was made possible after much technical experimentation, involving specialist knowledge from support staff at the University of Brighton; Wayne Case, Mark Joste and Scarlett Tierney. The print builds on previous research into the possibilities of laser cutting and relationships between manual drawing and print media as a form of material thinking. This particular work involved a new and original process which necessitated creating a vinyl stencil cut mechanically and transferred onto limestone. The image and stone were then prepared and etched using traditional lithographic processes of oil, gum, acid and water and printed on paper. The tile of the print is taken from a short story by Annie Dillard (1988).
